Prefecture Local Authority of Kavala- Drama - Xanthi

On the 16th September 1994 and according to the Law 2218/94 took place for the first time elections for the Prefectural Local Authority 2ond grade. According to the Law 2240/94, P.D. 6061 and 62/1995 were constituted three regions in which more than one Prefectures participated.

The Prefectural Local Authority of Drama-Kavala-Xanthi has under its territorial domain the Prefectures of the equivalent Perfectural Regions.

The President of the Extended, the Prefects and the members of the Prefectural Committee are elected directly by the people. The tenure of office is 4 years. Begins on the 1st of January of the first year after the elections and ends on 31 of December of the 4th year after the elections.

The Extended Prefectural Committee is of 67 members. At the elections of 1994 Mr Pavlos Papadopoulos was first elected as the President of the Extended Local Authority. In 1998 Precident was elected Mr Kostas Tatsis.

Goals

The propose of the Perfectural Local Authority is the co-ordination of the developmental effort of three Regions through programs that will take place with the help of the EU Financial Support.

Development of the geographical position of the territory.

The upgrade of the economical and social substructure, in order to become this territory an attractive place where productive activities will take place. This will result to the creation of new jobs and the increase of the local income.

Development of the human power.

Protection of the environment.

Development of the agricultural character of the territory, in order to prevent from the territorial to shrink.

Above all is the implementation of the principle of the Democratic Planning.

Previous experience of co-operation with other European organisations in the European Union.

In the last six years PLA has led five major initiatives partially financed by European funds:

Establishing a network for the advertisement of travel and tourism related SMEs and for supporting relevant financial transactions through e-commerce and the Internet (266000 EURO).

Supporting SMEs of the PLA geographical area for establishing business contacts in neighboring Bulgaria (175000 EURO).

Developing a strategy for dealing with the social and employment related effects of the technological changes that are been implemented in the marble mining and processing industries operating within the PLA geographical area (240000 EURO).

Setting up of teleworking centers (250000 EURO)
Job related training (310000 EURO)
